The Chiefs suffered their first loss of the 2022 NFL season in Week 3 against the Indianapolis Colts, losing 20-17 and dropping to a 2-1 record on the year. The game was marred by errors at every turn, just when the team had opportunities to get ahead, there was another costly mistake putting them behind the eight ball.
After the game, there was no finger-pointing done by the team. Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones and so on — they all knew that they shared a part of the blame for the loss. They all knew that there were problems that need to be fixed ahead of Week 4 on “Sunday Night Football.”
“Yeah listen, I like the locker room, I’ve told you that since training camp. It’s a good bunch,” Reid told reporters on Monday. “And all you guys have seen it; you’ve been around it and seen it – that are on this call. So, it’s something that you’re going to have highs and lows in the game, and now we got a low here. Losing in the National Football League is a tough thing, so how are we going to handle it?
“And that’s a good start – when you can admit a problem. Now the next thing is you got to fix the problem and then get ourselves ready to go play Tampa Bay. And that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to start that tomorrow and it must get better. And so, that’s our approach.”
The story of the 2022 Chiefs won’t be written in Week 3, but it could be a pivotal turning point in the season that helps this team improve and better achieve their season-long goals.

5 Chiefs stats to know for Chiefs in Week 4:
1. Series history: These two teams have only played each other 14 times in NFL history, with the first game occurring back in 1976. Tampa Bay currently leads the all-time series 8-6, with their last game being the Chiefs’ loss to the Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV.
2. Recent Super Bowl rematches: How often do teams who were defeated in a Super Bowl win their next matchup with the team they played? In the most recent rematches, it’s a 2-1 record in favor of the defeated team.
In Super Bowl LIII the Patriots defeated the Rams. The next matchup came in 2020 and Los Angeles came away with a win. In Super Bowl LII, the Eagles defeated New England. When the two teams had a rematch in 2019, the Patriots came away victorious. In Super Bowl LI, New England came back to defeat the Falcons. When the two teams next played in 2021, the Patriots came away victorious.
3. Bouncing back after the first loss: How often do the Chiefs bounce back with a win after their first loss of the season? Since 2013, K.C. has a 4-5 record after their first loss of the season. It has actually alternated every season since 2013 and last year the team dropped to 1-2 with a Week 3 loss to the Chargers. If that stands, Kansas City is due for a win in Week 4.
4. Chiefs vs. No. 1 ranked defense: The Chiefs’ offense isn’t catching much of a break this week. They’ll face the NFL’s No. 1 ranked defense. The Bucs currently lead the league in points allowed (27), turnovers (8) and rushing touchdowns allowed (0). They’re also in the top half of the league in nearly every other important defensive stat. The Chiefs faced a No. 1 ranked Buffalo defense in the playoffs last season and managed to score 42 points.
5. Keep up the pressure in Week 4: Steve Spagnuolo produced a ton of pressure in Week 3 against Colts QB Matt Ryan with games up front and blitzes. He should keep it up in Week 4 against Tom Brady. Everyone knows that the key to getting to Brady is to keep him under pressure. This season he’s only completed 46.7% of his passes when under pressure according to PFF.

Transactions:
9/25 - Contract terminated from practice squad - K Matt Ammendola (Read more here).
Quotable:
“Yeah, I talked to him. We have full trust in Skyy (Moore). He is talented. He made one mistake. At the end of the day, he made one mistake that ended up causing a touchdown, but I think he'll make a lot of plays in that Chiefs uniform that will be positive for us. So, we'll keep going back to him and keep giving him chances to make plays.” - Patrick Mahomes on Skyy Moore’s muffed punt
“I mean that’s the National Football League. It’s a game of inches. You can’t do things to beat yourself up. You have to go out there and win. I give a lot of credit to the Colts special teams. I think they did a hell of a job today. We did some good things on the field today; we just came up a little bit short and we’re going to have to go back watch the tape. We’ll learn to move on from this and learn not to repeat those mistakes.” - Justin Reid on mistakes made in Week 3
Quick hits:
From the weatherman: The NFL has a unique situation ahead of them with the Chiefs-Bucs Week 4 game. Hurricane Ian is on a collision course for Tampa Bay, potentially impacting the location of the game on Sunday. The Buccaneers are working with the NFL to set up contingencies for the game. They’ve already moved their practices to Miami, which is out of the path of the storm. We’ll keep you posted on any changes to the game’s location.
Also from the weatherman: It looks like Chiefs S Justin Reid got in studio at KSHB-TV and might be filling in for the weatherman on Monday.
