Bye-Week-Way-Too-Early 2024 Chiefs' Mock Draft
Annual tradition of taking a quick look at the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft from a Chiefs' perspective during the Bye Week.
It’s nearing mid-November and the Chiefs are just coming off their bye week. The Chiefs are currently in sole possession of first place in the AFC West and have a Monday Night showdown out of conference against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Chiefs are in the thick of a playoff race so it’s not something always at the forefront of everyone’s mind but this is the time of year a lot of NFL Draft conversations start to kick-up.
This is the last break the Chiefs’ have - until hopefully the playoff bye week - that there won’t be a game to react to on a Monday/Tuesday morning so let’s take full advantage and get a way too early look ahead to the 2024 NFL Draft.
2024 Too Early Mock Draft
The biggest hurdle with dealing with mock drafts this far out is figuring out what to do with the Chiefs’ in-house free agents and potential free agents to add. For this purpose, at this time we’ll just ignore that and focus entirely on the NFL Draft and looking at players and positions that could be potential needs going into 2024.
Round 1: Amarius Mims - OT
Georgia | 6’7” 340lbs
Amarius Mims is a massive OT with excellent movement skills and is following the footsteps of many Georgia OTs before him. Stuck on the bench his first two seasons do more highly talented veteran OTs, Mims didn’t get a chance to be a full time starter until 2024. He saw playing time in 2022 - including a start against Ohio State in last year’s CFB Playoffs - and began 2023 as the starting RT for Georgia.
Unfortunately Mims injured his ankle early in the year against South Carolina and had to have tightrope surgery. He returned against Ole Miss two months later and looked to be healthy for the stretch run. This means if Mims enters the NFL Draft this season he’s going to be doing so with less than 10 starts to his name and it may not matter. He has played RT at Georgia but LT in the past, including some time during Spring Practices.
Mims has one of the best blends of size, power, and athleticism that anyone is going to find in an OT prospect. He’s far from a polished OT prospect but he clearly has been playing the position at a high level for some time and shouldn’t be considered raw. The amount of space he takes up both in size but also his ability to work up the arc is outstanding. Once Mims gets his hands on a defender it’s usually ending right then and there. He needs to exercise some more patience in the run game but the raw power and movement ability provides an exceptionally high upside there as well.
