The Chiefs have promoted one of their recently-signed practice squad players to the 53-man roster. After releasing DT Taylor Stallworth earlier this week, the team has decided to sign DT Brandon Williams from their practice squad on Thursday.
A nine-year NFL veteran with the Baltimore Ravens, Williams is a different type of player compared to Stallworth. He has the reputation of being a run-stuffing defensive tackle that plays on first and second down. He’s also a player that has familiarity with the Chiefs’ defensive coaching staff.
“Brandon (Williams) brings a lot of energy,” Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo said. “Him and (Defensive Line Coach) Joe (Cullen) know each other really well from their Baltimore years. I was actually with Brandon his rookie year in Baltimore, so I knew him as a rookie. They change quite a bit from their first year in the league to (now) and that’s interesting. I’ve had other guys that I’ve had young and then years go by and then I’m with them again and they’re just different people. But listen, he’s a big, strong guy.”
His veteran prowess combined with his familiarity with the coaching staff has allowed Williams to quickly ingratiate himself with the team. The promotion to the active roster should lead to Williams’ first action with the team on Sunday.
“We’ll see where we’re at,” Spagnuolo said. “I mean it’s only been two days. Yesterday we didn’t even have helmets on. So, it’s going to take a little while to kind of sift through.”
With a new vacancy on the practice squad, the Chiefs also brought back former starting C Austin Reiter, who was released to make room for Williams initially.

Quotable:
“Because he has the ball in his hand, (Isiah Pacheco is) the one that’s most noticeable but other guys like Jack Cochrane has really gotten much, much better. He’s a guy that’s really playing at a high level. Leo Chenal (is) really, really playing great. (Bryan) Cook just keeps getting better. I mean those rookies – those are four phase guys that are playing every down for me, and they keep getting better and better each week. When guys like (Isiah) Pacheco makes big plays that means those guys are doing their job, so it all works hand in hand.” - Dave Toub on rookies who have made most progress on special teams
“Every week it starts up front. Those guys do a heck of a job and they’re showing up on tape. Every week it starts up front, their D-line is playing hard, they’re playing fast. Those two interior guys – the Jones brothers (Broncos DE Dre’Mont Jones and DT D.J. Jones) – they’re doing a hell of a job. (Broncos OLB Baron) Browning, number 53 (Broncos OLB Jonathon Cooper) – they got some guys. (Broncos DL Mike) Purcell’s doing his thing. The backers – (Broncos ILB) Josey (Jewell), 47 and 49 (Broncos ILB Alex Singleton). And hell, their secondary – (Broncos S) Justin Simmons, (Broncos S) Kareem Jackson. The nickel, number 21 (K’Waun Williams) – it’s a shame I can’t think of his name. But then, they got a rookie out there (Broncos CB Damarri Mathis) – I think the kid is from (Pittsburgh) – that’s playing. They’re very good. Ok? They show up on tape for all the right reasons. So although they are struggling, they’re still the Denver Broncos. They’re one of those teams that we know that has a great idea and feel for what we do, so it’s our job to make sure that we’re not taking anything for granted. I can (not) care less for what their record shows. I do know this, when you look at them defensively, they’re playing championship football. And it’s our job to make sure that our guys are ready and plugged in. They need to go out and perform.” - Eric Bieniemy on the challenge of facing the Broncos.
