Chiefs Beat Bills 27-24 in Buffalo, Advance to AFC Title Game, Again
It was everything we hoped it would be
The Kansas City Chiefs do it again!!!!
For a sixth-straight season, the Chiefs will advance to the AFC Championship game after beating the Buffalo Bills 27-24 Sunday night in Buffalo.
The Chiefs will now go on the road to face the Baltimore Ravens…but we’ll get to that later.
Here’s what stood out to KCSN’s Craig Stout and Matt Lane from Sunday night’s memorable win:
9.3 - Yards per attempt from Patrick Lavon Mahomes
The Chiefs offense has been dormant for the better part of the 2023-24 NFL season. They’ve been a shell of their former-selves, putting up lows in almost every single offensive category of the Patrick Mahomes era.
It left a lot to be desired, considering they were rostering one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game. After leaning on the defense for most of the season - this team entered the postseason with minuscule expectations on offense.
And in the biggest game of the year (so far), the Chiefs offense put on a masterclass.
Travis Kelce caught two touchdowns, pushing he and Mahomes to the all-time postseason lead in touchdown connections in the history of the league.
Isiah Pacheco rushed for 6.5 yards on 15 carries and punished the Bills’ backup linebacking corps. Marquez Valdes-Scantling caught not one, but TWO deep passes from Mahomes that were instrumental in the Chiefs offense putting up 27 points on the day.
But when push came to shove, it was once again Mahomes standing tall, throwing with his chest, and making magic happen in and out of the structure of the offense.
Mahomes threw for 9.3 yards per attempt – his second highest of the 2023-24 season - behind the first Los Angeles Chargers matchup, where they simply forgot to cover Travis Kelce for most of the day.
His numbers had been steadily falling to finish out the season, and a good performance (for Mahomes) against the Miami Dolphins in the Wild Card round made most wonder if he’d truly turned things around.
While the Bills were beat up on defense, Mahomes was electric through the air in one of the most impressive 215-yard performances I’ve ever seen. He had a small handful of throws he’d want back, but the majority of his drop-backs were spotless, orchestrating the team’s fourth-highest offensive output of the season in a monster playoff game on the road.
Patrick Mahomes was who we thought he was in the divisional round, proving once again that he’s one of the absolute best quarterbacks to ever play the game.
Light work for the NFL’s best player.
