The Chiefs kicked off the practice week with some disappointing injury news. After suffering a hamstring injury in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals, rookie first-round draft pick Trent McDuffie was placed on injured reserve. The two most significant injuries the team suffered in Week 1 had a common factor — the playing surface at State Farm Stadium in Arizona was a contributing factor to the injury.
“They resodded it, which is a good thing because they practice in there," Chiefs HC Andy Reid said on Tuesday. "But it was a little bit loose. That's what happens sometimes when you resod, is it's loose. Listen, it was part of the (Harrison) Butker injury and (Trent) McDuffie injury. Unfortunately, that was part of it. The turf picked up, and I would tell you that that did have something to do with it. If it didn't, I would tell you that, too. So it's not an excuse by any means, but I mean, you all can see it. Watch the tape."
McDuffie will be out a minimum of four games before the team can designate him to return from the list. That means he’ll miss games against the Chargers, Colts, Buccaneers and Raiders at the very least. In McDuffie’s absence, fans can expect seventh-round rookie Jaylen Watson to be on the field often.
