Chiefs Defense Dominates Jaguars on Sunday to Earn First Win of Season
Monday mornings are so much better after a win
Andy Reid moved into a tie for fourth place on the NFL’s all-time wins list as the Kansas City Chiefs (1-1) picked up their first win of the season by defeating the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1) on the road by score a 17-9 Sunday afternoon in Florida.
The defense was dominant (again). The offense was sloppy (again), but the Chiefs made enough plays in big moments to leave town with the victory.
Patrick Mahomes threw for more than 300 yards for the 42nd time in his career, which is five more times than the next-highest player since 2017 (Tom Brady, 37).
Chris Jones looked every bit of the ‘Defensive Player of the Year’ that he’s aiming for after his contract holdout ended after missing just one game. He finished the game with 1.5 sacks, 2 QB hits and 1 pass defensed.
Here’s what stood out on Sunday to KCSN’s Craig Stout:
1.67 - Yards per play allowed on third down by the Chiefs defense
The Chiefs defense was spectacular on Sunday afternoon against the Jaguars, and a large part of that success came on third downs - where Jacksonville's offense went 3-of-12 on the day.
Time and time again, the Chiefs defense had answers on third down, forcing a punt or an attempted 4th down conversion – of which the Jaguars were 0-for-2 on the day.
However, it was the efficiency of the performance that was most noteworthy on Sunday afternoon, with the Chiefs defense allowing just 1.67 yards per play on the pivotal down.
