The Kansas City Chiefs are getting set to square off with the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5. One of their main challenges — facing a defense coached by Brian Flores.
“(Vikings Defensive Coordinator) Brian Flores, we’ve gone against several times,” Chiefs HC Andy Reid said. “He’s very creative, brings people from everywhere, also plays regular zone (coverage) and man (coverage), but he does have quite a blitz package.”
Reid is being modest when talking about Flores’ blitz packages. No defensive coordinator in the NFL this season has blitzed with greater frequency than coach Flores, not even the Chiefs’ own Steve Spagnuolo. Reid knows that the veteran coordinator is going to have a variety of looks and even with Patrick Mahomes’ historical success against the blitz game, he’ll have to be ready to throw hot.
“It’s going to be a well-coached defense,” Mahomes said. “(Defensive Coordinator) Coach (Brian) Flores, I’ve played a couple times; him as a head coach, him as a coordinator. And all the different positions, they’re very well coached, they know the scheme and being in the right spots. They do a good mix of pressure and dropping out of pressure and try to make it look the same.”
The offense is coming off a rough week against the New York Jets in prime time. Mahomes knows they’re going to have to be at their best and execute at a high level in order to come out of Minnesota with a win.
Beyond The Game - Former Pittsburgh Steelers Great Shares Perspective on Life After NFL:
Mahomes on Vikings QB Kirk Cousins:
Mahomes and Cousins starred in the Netflix “Quarterback” docuseries. No. 15 got a chance to get to know Cousins a bit because of that. Mahomes spoke about what he learned about Cousins.
“The mental side of it. I mean, obviously, he’s (Vikings QB Kirk Cousins) able to really dissect defenses, (and) get the ball to the right spot. You can tell they put a lot on him to be able to check at the line of scrimmage, which I thought was really cool to see. Physically, man, I mean he took a beating last year, but he just came back every time and stood in there and made throws. He’s a guy you can tell loves football and loves going out there and competing every single week.”
This will mark the first time the two have played each other during their careers.
