After a long wait in free agency, the Chiefs finally have added a new receiver to the roster.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports that WR Richie James has agreed to terms with Kansas City. The length of the deal is currently unknown, but one can expect it’s only for a single year. A former seventh-round draft pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2018, James is coming off of a breakout season with the New York Giants.
I anticipate this signing has a lot more to do with the expectations of Kadarius Toney, Skyy Moore and Isiah Pacheco to take a greater dose of snaps on the offensive side of the ball in 2023. That leaves a need for Dave Toub’s special teams unit at the return specialist position. James has experience as both punt returner and kick returner with a combined 122 returns for over 1,600 yards.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the 27-year-old won’t find some opportunities on offense with the Chiefs. The 5-foot-8 and 185-pound wide receiver set career-high marks in receptions (57), yards (569) and touchdowns (4) with Daniel Jones throwing him passes in 2022. Just imagine what he can accomplish with Patrick Mahomes as his quarterback in 2023.
