When the Kansas City Chiefs didn’t make another move at the NFL trade deadline following the acquisition of Mecole Hardman weeks prior, many fans throughout the Chiefs Kingdom were left disappointed. Chiefs TE Travis Kelce addressed that disappointment on Friday from Frankfurt, Germany.
"I standby (the fact) that this team has every piece it needs to be great,” Kelce said. “I know we've got a team that can put points up. I know we've got the coaches to put us in positions to succeed. That's where we're moving going forward. It just takes guys locking in and being ready for those big-time moments when we need it most."
The biggest thing that this Chiefs team needs to do in order to prove that to themselves is to get out of their own way. They committed five offensive turnovers in Week 8 against the Denver Broncos, which is a surefire method to lose a football game. Beyond that, dropped passes, penalties, and other miscues are also of concern.
“If you watch that game, there's a lot of turnovers, and the statistics for when you turn the ball over, they're not very high on winning," Kelce said. "So the biggest thing for us is being able to control those turnovers, being able to control the dropped passes. There's a few missed assignments and I take accountability in all this, and I think everybody in that locker room on the offensive side has taken that same approach this week."
Kansas City will have a shot at redemption on the world stage in NFL Week 9, but it’ll ultimately remain up to the players to take full advantage.
KCSN Update: 3 Stats TO KNOW Prior to Chiefs vs. Dolphins
Spags details plans at linebacker:
The Chiefs are dealing with some attrition and uncertainty at the linebacker position. How do they plan to handle it? Steve Spagnuolo peeled back the curtains a bit.
“It’s a great point. Nick (Bolton) and Willie (Gay) are speed linebackers,” Spagnuolo said. “They cover as much ground as anybody in this league. We’re not sure (if) Willie is out right now, Nick we know is not going to play. We’re just going to have to rely on the guys we put in there. Now Drue (Tranquill) certainly is going to run around real fast and you guys can see that. Jack (Cochrane) will step in there if he has to. Leo (Chenal) will step in there. He made some plays for us last week. I feel confident in the guys we’ll put out there. We certainly would like to have Nick and Willie, but we’ll see what happens with that. If we don’t have them, we’ll use the guys we’ve got and rally around that.”
If Gay Jr. is unable to play, the Chiefs added LB Darius Harris, who was with the team from 2019-2022. He has the versatility to play all three linebacker positions, albeit a quick turnaround for the veteran after being signed from the Raiders’ practice squad earlier this week.
“The one good thing about Darius (Harris) is he was here,” Spagnuolo explained. “The other thing we remembered when we first brought Darius here – if you guys remember he had kind of a red shirt year because he had the injury, so he didn’t do anything that first year. What we knew right from the beginning – (former Chiefs Linebackers Coach) Matt House was here, and we interviewed Darius. He was a very cerebral linebacker, he’s really smart. So, I think he’ll pick up things quickly, and if we got stuck in a situation where he had to go, at least we know he’s had parts of the system before.”
