The Chiefs held their first padded practice of training camp on Friday, marking the return of “real” football in St. Joseph, Missouri. It was an extremely hot day of practice, as the team issued an excessive heat warning to fans in attendance.
The clack of pads was heard throughout the day at Missouri Western State University, with perhaps the biggest hit of the day being served up by CB Lamar Jackson against WR Kekoa Crawford. Some offensive players on the sideline gave Jackson an earful after the big hit.
The play of the day came quickly with Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes uncorking a 40-50 yard TD pass to WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the opening 11-on-11 session. Valdes-Scantling was working against S Mike Edwards in coverage. KCSN captured the play here.
WRs Rashee Rice and Justyn Ross continued to impress on Friday with each catching multiple passes. Both players continue to mix in with the first-team and second-team offenses. Ross, who has a substantial injury history, handled full contact well.
Overall, the offensive line vs. defensive line competition went exactly as you’d expect. The offensive interior won the day because the interior defensive line lacked the presence of DT Chris Jones. 1-on-1 drills had a good mix of wins and losses for each offensive line and defensive line. DE Mike Danna, DE Charles Omenihu and DE Joshua Kaindoh were among the standouts on the edge. Second-year OL Mike Caliendo continues to impress as the second-team center.
RT Jawaan Taylor, who struggled as a run-blocker in Jacksonville, seems to be benefiting from playing next to RG Trey Smith. They had some standout work in the run game on Friday.
RB Deneric Prince continued to impress during the team run period in 9-on-7 drills. Andy Reid specifically mentioned his vision after practice.
“(Deneric) Prince it’s just a matter of staying on top of everything,” Reid said. “It’s new to him, protections are always for the rookie running backs a thing you have to learn, but he’s such a hard worker, great hands, looked like he had great vision in the 9-on-7 run game.”
There was one scuffle during practice, including one between Chiefs TE Travis Kelce, CB Dicaprio Bootle and S Bryan Cook. Cook played off the incident after practice as Kelce simply showing them a little passion.
As far as injuries are concerned, LB Nick Bolton (illness) returned to practice. LB Isaiah Moore (knee) and WR Kadarius Toney (knee, meniscus surgery) remain out of practice. DT Tershawn Wharton (knee, ACL) remains on the active/PUP list and out of practice.
During practice, LB Drue Tranquill, TE Jody Fortson and DE Mike Danna each suffered injuries. Tranquill suffered a neck strain and Fortson suffered a shoulder injury. Both players were carted up the hill. Danna suffered a strained calf, which is potentially significant given that he missed four games with a calf injury a season ago.

Quotable:
“He didn’t say much. He just was tired of it and I’m sure there was some frustration there, but he’ll be fine, he’s a sharp kid, he’ll make it somewhere.” - Andy Reid on John Ross’ sudden retirement
“Yeah sure sharp kid, tremendous talent. This is all new to him. When you’re a rookie receiver, you come in here, and you’re running miles. So, you got to get used to that and the pace. There’s no play off, there’s no back side, you have to go 100 miles per hour. So, he’s learning that, but he’s willing and he works hard and the quarterbacks like him. He’s doing a good job.” - Andy Reid on Rashee Rice
“Yeah, one-on-ones is a love-hate relationship. You know you love them when you do good, you hate it when you get beat off the line. For me, I just try and calm down the situation and just really lock into the coaching points, the techniques, knowing what I need to correct. Just being able to capture that moment, the finite moment and be effective at what you’re doing. Because at the end of the day a lot of times a guy goes that far inside, he’s going to run into your buddy, or he might over rush. It’s you “mono e mono” all the technical details, every little piece matters so being able to lock in for those little seconds and get your job done is a great feeling when you can do it right, sucks when you lose.” - RG Trey Smith on the importance of one-on-ones
“It’s been good, you know, first day of pads was nice. We had the pads clocking a little bit, you can tell some guys are definitely excited. But just being smart, as you know, we’re in camp and our whole objective is to get to the game. So, being smart with that aspect. Just being in control and having controlled aggression. As far as leadership wise, make sure everybody in front of me is doing a good job, make sure everybody knows what they need to do, knows like the checks going on, because the faster they play, the faster I can play. As long as everybody is in the right position in front of me, we’re good.” - S Bryan Cook on the first day of pads
“I just want to ball out man. Just like last year, I wanted to ball out. I missed four games unfortunately, but this year man trying to be injury-free, stay out there with my team and give it all I got and let everything else handle it itself in the backend. I just want to win another Super Bowl, add that to my resume, and let everything else handle itself.” - LB Willie Gay Jr. on his fourth year in the NFL
