It’s a short turnaround for the Chiefs with “Thursday Night Football” against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 2. With that short time to recuperate from Week 1, the team’s kicker, Harrison Butker, has been ruled out of the game. Butker rolled his ankle on the turf during the opening kickoff. If you read yesterday’s newsletter, you’ll know that Andy Reid blamed the resodded playing surface in Arizona’s State Farm Stadium for injuries to Butker and rookie CB Trent McDuffie. What exactly is the issue holding out Butker this week, though? It’s an ankle sprain, and it’s not just about managing pain, per Reid.
“Yeah, I think if it was just a pain thing, I think he would bear through that,” Reid told reporters on Tuesday. “But he’s got some swelling in there, so I think it’s a matter of him being functional enough to do it. I mean he’s a tough kid, so we’ll just see how that works out.”
With Butker ruled out of the game, the Chiefs will rely on practice squad K Matt Ammendola, who is expected to be elevated to the 53-man roster tomorrow. He beat out several veteran kickers such as Cameron Dicker, Chase McLaughlin, Cody Parkey, Tristan Vizcaino and Elliott Fry during a tryout on Tuesday. Fry kicked for the Chiefs last season when Butker was on the COVID-19 list.
Ammendola spent 11 games last season kicking for the New York Jets. During those 11 games, he was 13-of-19 on field goals and 14-of-15 on extra points. He also recorded 27 touchbacks on 47 kickoffs.

Quotable:
“Yeah so, every year he seems to get better. He’s very smart. He understands where to go with the ball, so you know he’s got (a) real good grasp of that, of the offense. And he’s accurate. He does a nice job and that’s not getting any worse as he goes, he’ll just keep polishing that moving ahead. The experience is everything now.” - Chiefs HC Andy Reid on Chargers QB Justin Herbert
“Yeah, I mean, those things happen. Obviously, we don’t want them to but he’s playing hard. Both times he fumbled he was trying to get extra yards. So, I mean all you can say is just try to keep it high and tight and keep two hands on it when you get in traffic. But I loved how hard he was playing, trying to run through tackles (and) get those extra yards. I think if he kind of keeps it high and tight, he’ll start breaking some of those tackles when they’re going in for their strips and he’ll get a few extra yards for us.” - Patrick Mahomes on his message to JuJu Smith-Schuster after his Week 1 fumble
Quick hits:
From Arrowhead Stadium: Watching the Chiefs is never like watching paint dry, but the team did give fans an opportunity to be bored out of their mind on Wednesday. The team shared an hour-plus live stream of the grounds crew finishing the endzone painting at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. For the 50th anniversary of the stadium, they’re going with the classic red end zone look that the stadium had when it opened back in 1972. Here’s a look at the finished product:
From Andy's Frozen Custard: Chiefs TE Travis Kelce is teaming up with Andy’s Frozen Custard to release the 87 & Running Concrete. It features caramel, Oreo, and cookie dough blended together with the custard. A portion of all the proceeds will go to Kelce’s 87 & Running Foundation, which empowers disadvantaged youth to achieve success by providing resources and support to their communities and cultivating their talent. The 87 & Running Concrete is available at all 11 of Andy’s Frozen Custard’s Kansas City area locations beginning Wednesday, Sept. 14.
