After a quiet Thursday with the team introducing their first two free-agent additions, Chiefs GM Brett Veach was extra busy on Friday. The team agreed to terms with two defensive free agents in former Chargers LB Drue Tranquill and former Buccaneers S Mike Edwards. Each player agreed to a one-year contract worth $3 million, with the potential of reaching $5 million with incentives.
A former fourth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame, Tranquill was the Chargers’ tackle leader in 2022. He notched 146 total tackles, which was over 30 more than the next closest defender in Los Angeles, also a career-high mark. He figures to be a sub-package linebacker in Kansas City, providing solid coverage ability and a good sense for the blitz game.
Edwards comes to Kansas City on the back of a productive two-year stretch as a ball-hawking safety in Tampa Bay. The former third-round pick out of Kentuck in 2019, has three interceptions returned for touchdowns over the past two seasons, which is good for the most in the NFL during that span. He was part of the team that defeated the Chiefs in Super Bowl LV.
