Chiefs Outlast Dolphins: Stats to Know and Turning Point of the Game
It was a satisfying victory for the Chiefs on Sunday
The Kansas City Chiefs (7-2) become the first team in NFL history to win games in four different countries - besting the Miami Dolphins (6-3) by a score of 21-14 Sunday morning in Frankfurt, Germany.
Combined with their wins over the Detroit Lions in London in 2015, plus the thrilling win over the Los Angeles Chargers in Mexico City back in 2019, plus the other 545 wins in the United States - the Chiefs get to add another line to the resume of what they’ve accomplished in the Andy Reid era in Kansas City.
But Sunday’s win - like many we’ve seen so far this season - came in large part because of the defense, which held the NFL’s top-ranked offense to their lowest point total of the season (14), and the second-fewest net offensive yards of the season (292).
Here’s what stood out to KCSN’s Craig Stout during the win on Sunday:
26.5 - Miami Net Yards per Drive
Coming into the week, most assumed that a terrific defensive performance by the Kansas City Chiefs would be required against one of the NFL's best offenses. What many didn't expect was that the Chiefs were going to limit the Miami Dolphins to one of their worst outings of the year in Germany.
The Chiefs defense allowed less than 300 total yards for the fifth time this year and held the Dolphins to just 26.5 net yards per drive - and 24.1 if Chris Jones doesn't commit a personal foul penalty on third and 20. The Dolphins had averaged 40.5 yards per drive on the season, and only had one game this year under 27 prior to the Chiefs: 25.5 against the Philadelphia Eagles on just 8 drives.
Furthermore, the Dolphins led the NFL in points per drive heading into the Chiefs game this weekend, averaging 2.99 points every time they touched the ball - a full 0.43 points per drive clear of any other team in the league. They averaged just 1.27 points per drive against the Chiefs defense, who should exit this game allowing just 1.40 points per drive on the season.
