While Chiefs season doesn’t officially kick off until next week, the team is hosting a free event on Friday, September 2. The Chiefs are taking over the Crossroads Arts District in Kansas City for their monthly event, “First Fridays.” From 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. CT, Chiefs Kingdom can head over to W. 19th Street from Wyandotte St. to Baltimore Ave. There will be a host of entertainment, including live music, live mural painting, and local artist pop-ups. Our friends Charlie Hustle Co. will be selling merchandise from their Arrowhead Collection as well.
Kansas City still has a bit of roster housekeeping to do ahead of the season opener. They’re expected to move TE Blake Bell to injured reserve and sign LB Elijah Lee to the 53-man roster, but the team might be working on some moves to free some cap space before they make those transactions. They added nearly $3 million in dead cap space during 53-man roster cuts and are projected to be near the bottom of the league in salary cap space heading into the season. Perhaps they’re working on an extension for a pending 2023 free agent to help clear some cap space?

Quotable:
“Yeah, every year I feel like it’s tough because you get into a scenario where you’re trying to figure out how you can kind of get the best of both worlds. I guess you know you’re always looking at teams and looking at what they need and you’re looking at the trends of these waiver wires. So, you’re trying to sit there and calculate, without getting too cute, because at the end of the day you just want to keep the best 53 (players). But there is an element of working the waiver wire system the right way where the likelihood of guys being available to sign to the practice squad (vs) the likelihood of guys getting claimed on the waiver wire. So, it’s difficult because you always have to hold your breath when you expose guys to the waiver wire but I think in this case for this year some of the guys that we were looking and having hard debates on we were able to get those guys back on the practice squad. Every year it’s difficult and some years it works out and some years it didn’t. I think the way it worked out this year I think we feel very fortunate and lucky, and I think we’re heading into the season in the right direction.” - Chiefs GM Brett Veach on the difficulty of roster cuts
“Yeah, we had a great year in St. Joe again. As you know Matt (Derrick), we’ve talked about what great partners they are. For those of you who were at that press conference this year up there, it was just another example of the outpouring of support and appreciation from the mayor (John Josendale), from the president of the University (Dr. Elizabeth Kennedy), from the AD (Andrew Carter), from everybody who works with every day, so we do have options to move forward. We’ll start our conversations here in the next couple of weeks. We’re going to get through the start of the season and then we’ll sit back down with them. But what we always do is we review the past year: What did we learn? What could we do better? What can we do different? Sometimes that takes investments from the University, sometimes that takes investments from us, but it’s a great opportunity for us to get away. Our (Head) Coach (Andy Reid) loves it, our GM (Brett Veach) loves it, our players – for the most part – love it. There’re definitely some dog days of living in those dorms – no matter what dorms you’re at, that you got to factor into it. But we’re only one of a handful of teams that do this and go away. And we really believe in it. One of the reasons we believe in it, and one of the reasons it’s successful for us, is because of Missouri Western. So, we have every plan to continue there. We have every plan to extend our deal and extend our other option up there. We just got to get through the process.” - Chiefs president Mark Donovan on the future of training camp in St. Joseph
