Chiefs vs Broncos: Key Stats and Turning Points
The Chiefs' defense led the way again on Thursday night
The Kansas City Chiefs won their 16th-straight game over the Denver Broncos on Thursday night - besting their AFC West Divisional rival once again by a score of 19-8.
Here’s what stood out to KCSN’s Craig Stout and Matty Lane from the hard-fought victory.
0.46 - ANY/A for Russell Wilson against the Chiefs Defense
It’s difficult to measure quarterback performance with so many metrics available that different sites implement to judge one of the most difficult positions in sports. However, one that doesn’t have as much of an element of subjectiveness comes from Adjusted Net Yards per Attempt, or ANY/A.
This formula takes Passing yards, subtracts sack yards, adds the number of touchdowns (multiplied by 20) and subtracts interceptions (multiplied by 45). That number is then divided by the number of pass attempts and the number of sacks. It’s not a perfect metric by any means, but it’s a good way to judge pass defense and quarterback performance.
Russell Wilson has had a career ANY/A of 6.87, but has posted just a 5.91 ANY/A since he arrived in Denver. For reference, Patrick Mahomes’ career ANY/A is 7.98. However, against the Chiefs defense on Thursday night, Wilson posted one of his career lows in this category, barely staying in the positive with 0.46 ANY/A.
Wilson was under duress for most of the night from the Chiefs’ four man rush, and he had four passes batted at the line of scrimmage – with one leading to an interception. He simply couldn’t get anything going through the air against Steve Spagnuolo’s group, as they were able to hold a quarterback under 100 yards passing for the second time this year.
