Eric Bieniemy might not be the only coach that the Chiefs lose to Washington this off-season. According to multiple reports, the Commanders are set to interview Chiefs RB coach Greg Lewis for an undisclosed role on Bieniemy’s offensive staff in Washington.
Lewis played in the NFL under Chiefs HC Andy Reid, but he also spent time with Bieniemy on the Vikings toward the end of his playing career. As a coach, Lewis has been in Kansas City since 2017 when he replaced David Culley as the Chiefs’ receivers coach. In 2021, Lewis changed roles and became running back coach in Kansas City.
“Greg (Lewis) actually came to me about wanting the challenge of coaching the running backs,” Reid said ahead of the 2021 NFL season. “And as you guys know about how I feel about Greg, he’s very, very intelligent, has a great feel for the game, did a phenomenal job with the wide receivers, and now he’s able to learn that other side—the protection side and all that goes into coaching the running backs and the run game, and still give them tips in the pass game to make them even better than what they are now.”
Having coached both receivers and running backs before, it’s possible that Lewis is eyeing an opportunity to coach quarterbacks in Washington. If he has aspirations for a head-coaching opportunity in the future, it’s no wonder that he’s considering leaving Kansas City after the saga that has been Bieniemy’s pursuit of a head-coaching job over the past five seasons. We can only hope it’s not the case and that other coaches don’t get discouraged by what happened to Bieniemy during his time with the Chiefs.
