Whatever kind of praise Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones will get this week is so well deserved. Both of them used the platform of the 2023 AFC Championship to add to their legacies in a big way.
Jones was the best player on the field on Sunday, and finally got the elusive sack stat to match the disruption he’s provided in his playoff career. Mahomes put together a masterful performance despite limitations due to a high ankle injury — something few people would be able to play through.
The story of the Chiefs’ victory is far from just about the stars making plays.
I have never seen the kind of gutsy, team effort this group put together in my life. Mahomes was hobbled, and that seemed to focus the supporting cast around him. The top to bottom of the roster played as if they knew this team was going to need their best, and they took it to heart. Whether it was Mahomes or the Bengals running their mouths all week, everyone was prepared to do their job.
That is revealed by the depth that was tested in this game. Injuries piled up further, yet the next man up stepped in and made plays. It was a remarkable performance, with remarkable plays and moments we’re going to remember forever as Chiefs fans.
There are some plays that shouldn’t be forgotten that likely will because of all the high level things the Chiefs put on tape this week. Some will get overlooked, but before we turn the page I want to highlight a few that shouldn’t.
