The tampering period for NFL Free Agency officially starts on Monday March 11th at 4:00PM EST. Our Kansas City Chiefs are currently in contract/trade negotiations with two star defensive players in Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed. The roster also has a few more holes at valuable positions than Super Bowl winning teams usually do.
The way this off-season is shaping up is looking like the Chiefs - with some shrewd moves to current players under contract - could have a little more money to play around with in free agency than years past. It always makes for a fun offseason but what approach will they take? Should they shell out big money early, what names should they look for, and what positions should wait until the draft?
Let’s talk through some of that now and look at some Free Agents that might fit with the Chiefs. In this process we have to keep in mind the price and role the players may have on the team - to the best of our ability. We are also going to focus on just on three big needs: wide receiver, defensive tackle, and offensive tackle so let’s get into it.
Free Agent Fits
Wide Receiver
This wide receiver class has lost significant talent over the past few weeks with Michael Pittman and Tee Higgins getting Franchised Tagged and Mike Evans resigning with Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This thinned out the available options for the Chiefs and likely pushes them towards addressing the top end of their wide receiver depth chart in the NFL Draft.
Still, it’s likely the Chiefs look to add some veteran talent to the room. Players like Hollywood Brown and Darnell Mooney fit an archetype that the Chiefs have often chased with their speed and vertical ability. Mooney has had success in the past with Matt Nagy in Chicago and Hollywood Brown has been asked to be two different teams top wide receiver over the years. Either player would likely require a notable contract to lure them to Kansas City but not so big that it will hamper the Chiefs’ salary cap situation too much. It would bring the Chiefs’ more flexibility in the NFL Draft and alleviate the pressure of having to take a wide receiver early.
