How does Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes handle the bye week? | KCSN Daily 11.16
Plus latest Chiefs news, KCSN podcasts, Substack articles and more.
Everyone approaches the bye week differently in the NFL, but one given is that players typically spend some extra time with their families doing all sorts of activities. That’s the case for Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, at least to start.
“I got to spend some time in Texas with the family then obviously had my charity gala, which was really cool,” Mahomes declared. “Then (we) got to go to the Texas Tech game at KU. A lot of family time, and got to look at a little bit of football as well. It’s always good to get the bye week, especially at that midpoint of the season to kind of refresh and restart for the next part of it.”
In terms of the football side of the bye week, Mahomes likes to reset in a big way. He always takes some time to go back and focus on his fundamentals, such as his footwork. From there, he does a full review of the season and breaks down areas that need improvement.
“I always go back to the fundamentals, try to get back to my fundamentals as best as I can during the bye week,” Mahomes said. “Then I think watching the tape – seeing what we did well, what we can improve on and then try to use that into this next part of the season and try to be even better than we went into the bye.”
After having a few bye weeks under his belt, Mahomes has figured out what works best for him. And as far as making improvements goes, he’s figured out that there isn’t always some grandiose answer or revelation to be had.
“I think what I’ve realized now is (that) it’s never as big as it seems, it’s always little things as far as fundamentals as far as games and stuff like that,” Mahomes said. “It doesn't surprise me now – instead of trying to make these big, huge changes you just go back to the fundamentals and try to execute better.”

Is this the best defense Kansas City has ever had? Chris Jones weighs in:
After the first half of the season, some people are calling this the best defense of the Patrick Mahomes era. Others believe that the defense is so good, it already ranks among the best in franchise history. For Chiefs DT Chris Jones, well, he’s not too eager to get that far ahead of himself.
“Overall, I still think we can get so much better,” Jones explained. “So far so good – the best overall defense, it’s still halfway through the season, for me to say that now and we end up at dead last, it doesn't even matter. We take it one game at a time, continue to get better, ask me this question at the end of the year and I’ll have an answer for you.”
Patience is a virtue and Jones has bigger goals in mind. He wants to be able to declare this defense the best he’s ever played with while hoisting the Lombardi Trophy on stage in front of Chiefs Kingdom in February.
