After seeing wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman walk in free agency, the Chiefs have finally sought to retain one of their own free agents at the position. NFL agency JL Sports announced on Friday morning that their client, Justin Watson, had re-signed in Kansas City on a two-year deal. Watson will earn $1.4 million fully guaranteed over the life of the contract, with an opportunity to make up to $6 million with incentives.
A former fifth-round draft pick out of Pennsylvania by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018, the 27-year-old Watson was a surprise for the Chiefs in 2022. He made the 53-man roster as a reserve/future signing after impressing Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs’ coaches and the front office during the course of the offseason. He’d go on to catch 15 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns during the regular season, along with playing a key role on special teams.
This move doesn’t necessarily change things in terms of needs at the wide receiver position, but it does make the bottom of the roster that much more competitive. Guys like Ihmir Smith-Marsette and Justyn Ross are going to have to really impress in order to push others out and make the 53-man roster out of training camp and the preseason.
