We lay out the most interesting games of the weekend in College Football.
Week 5 of the College Football season is here and we’ve finally made it to the meat of the season. Last week there was an uptick in close games and that trend should continue as every team continues to get into conference play. Ranked vs ranked games are becoming more common and upsets are always on the horizon.
This is the time of year that makes College Football great and we’re here with the KCSNU Kickoff to get you ready for the day!
What to Watch on CFB’s Week 2
Local Games
Iowa State vs Kansas
Time: 3:30PM EST | Location: Lawrence, KS | TV Station: ESPN2
Prospect To Watch: Xavier Hutchinson | ISU | WR | #8
Xavier Hutchinson has been Iowa State’s leading receiver the last two seasons and is off to his best start early on in 2022. His combination of size and speed makes him a lethal vertical threat on any given play. He’s at his best working a vertical receiving stem but he’s shown some elusiveness in his hips to think he can develop into an all around WR. Kansas’ defense hasn’t been excellent but they have some defenders - namely Cobee Bryant - who may be able to match Hutchinson’s athleticism on the field.
Texas Tech vs Kansas State
Time: 12:00PM EST | Location: Manhattan, KS | TV Station: ESPN+
Prospect To Watch: Tyree Wilson | TE | DE | #19
Tyree Wilson initially went to Texas A&M and earned playing time as a freshman but has since transferred to Texas Tech. After a slow sophomore season he really picked it up in 2021 and has carried all of that momentum to 2022. A massive defender at 6’6” 275lbs, Wilson is exceptional against the run but shows improved hand usage and strength when attacking the passer making him a legitimate pass rush threat. Kansas State may not have great NFL Draft prospects at OT but they are experienced and should make rosters at the next level giving Wilson a good test.
Georgia vs Missouri
Time: 7:30PM EST | Location: Columbia, MO | TV Station: SEC Network
Prospect To Watch: Darnell Washington | UGA | TE | #0
Darnell Washington may be the single most imposing figure in all of college football. Listed at 6’7” 265lbs and he is every bit of that size but then you watch him move. Everyone remembers the hurdle from Week 1 against Oregon or the highlights of him running routes in the pre-game. This massive TE blocks up to his size but then has true athleticism for the position. Brock Bowers overshadows his play on any given week but the NFL won’t be sleeping on Washington come April.
Saturday Schedule
Kentucky vs Ole Miss
Time: 12:00PM EST | Location: Oxford, MS | TV Station: ESPN
Prospect To Watch: Zach Evans | MISS | RB | #6
Zach Evans was the number two RB recruit back in 2020. A couple recruiting decision mistakes saw him be forced over to TCU where he was electric but battled through some injuries. This past offseason he transferred to Ole Miss and has hit the ground running even harder and faster. His first step explosion is fantastic. It allows him to dangerous in zone or gap schemes and be one of the best homerun hitters at the position in the entire draft class.
Alabama vs Arkansas
Time: 3:30PM EST | Location: Knoxville, TN | TV Station: CBS
Prospect To Watch: Jahmyr Gibbs | ALA | RB | #1
Jahmyr Gibbs was the premier RB transfer this season - yes, even over Evans - and he hit a fantastic situation. It’s hard not to watch Gibbs play and see flashes of Alvin Kamara from back at Tennessee. He’s such a dynamic playmaker in the running game or passing game that you have to almost get upset he doesn’t see more volume. It’s his receiving ability that is going to be extremely intriguing for the NFL and when Alabama is pushed up against a wall, they love to rely on it.
NC State vs Clemson
Time: 7:30PM EST | Location: Clemson, SC | TV Station: ABC
Prospect To Watch: Bryan Bresee | CLE | DT | #11
Bryan Bresee was a monster back in 2020 but an injury slowed him down before ending his 2021 season. Now he’s back and looking as good - if not better - as ever. His ability to win with power, speed, and lateral quickness on the interior is difficult to defend and as his technique continues to develop he only gets more dangerous. If he can finish out his season like he started it, we may see him join Jalen Carter in the top 10 getting two DTs at the top of the board. NC State doesn’t have another Icky Ekwonu along the OL but it’s still a high end group that would be a good feather in the cap.
Wildcard Watches
Oklahoma State vs Baylor
Time: 3:30PM EST | Location: Waco, TX| TV Station: Fox Sports
Prospect To Watch: Connor Galvin | BU | OT | #76
Connor Galvin was the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the year last season and has continued that strong play in 2022. He isn’t the strongest or the most athletic but he consistently gets the job done in both pass and run game. His hand speed and timing leads off his list of “strengths”. He utilizes a variety of different strike techniques and does a great job re-setting his hands. He’s got a big test with underclassman Collin Oliver and draft eligible prospects Tyler Lacy and Brock Martin.
Cincinnati vs Tulsa
Time: 7:00PM EST | Location: Tulsa, OK | TV Station: ESPN U
Prospect To Watch: Arquon Bush | CIN | DB | #9
Arquon Bush had been the slot CB for the Bearcats that past few season but as Coby Bryant and Sauce Gardner moved on to the NFL he transitioned to the outside. He’s been a dynamic playmaker his entire career but also given up plenty in return. This year he seems to be honing in his risk-taking while playing the field-corner position for the Bearcats. Tulsa will provide a great test as the WR trio of Isaiah epps, JC Santana, and Keylon Stokes is one of the better ones he’ll face all season.
