Lucas Niang's 21-day practice window begins | KCSN Daily 11.2

The Chiefs will designate OT Lucas Niang to return to practice from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list. This will open his 21-day practice window, where Niang will be allowed to return to practice while not yet being activated to the roster. The team will have that period to evaluate his healthy and decide whether to activate him to the 53-man roster or place him on season-ending injured reserve.
Niang landed on the Reserve/PUP list at the start of the season as he recovered from a season-ending knee injury suffered in Week 17 of the 2021 NFL season. Even if Niang is eventually activated to the 53-man roster, it’s hard to say how much impact he’ll have in his return. It’s certainly far from a foregone conclusion that he’ll be able to replace an incumbent starter on the offensive line.
The former third-round draft pick in 2020 missed his entire rookie season after opting out due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the 2021 NFL season, he opened the season as the team’s right tackle, making five consecutive starts before he was benched in favor of veteran Mike Remmers. He’d eventually reclaim his starting role before a rib injury saw him lose it again. In total, he’s played in just 12 career NFL games.

Quotable:
“Yeah, first off, he’s super excited. You can tell how much he’s ready to get out there and play. Physically, everybody sees how much physical gifts he has – he’s fast, he’s bigger than I thought. He’s done a good job of whenever he catches the ball and being able to make people miss in space. We’re just excited to get him into this culture, into this team and see what he can do in this offense.” - Patrick Mahomes’ first impressions of Kadarius Toney.
“Right now I don’t really have any expectations. I just want to come in and do what’s asked of me. Whatever plays (and) whatever assignments I have to do, I’m going to do them my hardest.” - Kadarius Toney on how much he expects to play in Week 9.
