The Chiefs officially signed five of their seven draft picks ahead of organized team activities. Here’s a look at the rookies now under contract:
Round 3: Oklahoma OT Wanya Morris
Round 4: Virginia Tech S Chamarri Conner
Round 5: Stephen F. Austin DE BJ Thompson
Round 6: Texas DT Keondre Coburn
Round 7: Ball State CB Nic Jones
That leaves first-round pick DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah and second-round pick WR Rashee Rice. It might be most difficult getting Rice under contract because he falls within a range of draft slots where agents have more negotiating leverage on guaranteed money. Last year, Skyy Moore was the last draft pick to sign in Kansas City for this same reason.
According to the NFLPA’s public salary cap report, the Chiefs have just over $2.8 million in salary cap space available after these signings. Right now, only the top 51 contracts on the 90-man roster count toward the team’s salary cap situation.
