More snaps for Isiah Pacheco, Skyy Moore ahead? | KCSN Daily 10.20
Plus injury report, latest KCSN podcasts, quotes and more Chiefs news.
Welcome back to the latest issue of KCSN Daily, where we deliver the best Kansas City Chiefs content to your inbox.
A point of frustration through six weeks surrounds the usage of rookies Skyy Moore and Isiah Pacheco. Moore has been averaging around 20 offensive snaps a game lately, while Pacheco has been lucky to get 10 snaps on offense.
Is this just the natural process of rookies getting adjusted to the NFL? That’s what Chiefs HC Andy Reid seemed to suggest of Moore on Wednesday.
“Listen – I think he’s going to continue to grow through the season,” Reid said of Moore. “I think the more he plays, the better he’s going to get, the more familiar he’ll become (and) the faster he’ll play. Those things that take place with young guys, so we give him a little bit more every week and he’s been doing fine with it.”
As for the running game, there seems to be a bit more in play for Pacheco.
“Yeah so, we’ve got trust in all of them,” Reid said of the running backs. “And they’ve all got kind of their plays and times that we try to use them. It just depends on the game. So, this game might be different than the last game. We try to give them as close to equal opportunities as we can, (Isiah) Pacheco came up a little short this last game here. Ten reps I think it was.”
For Pacheco to get more opportunities, it sounds like he’ll have to make the most of the few repetitions he already gets both in practice and during games.
“Obviously, there’s – just what you said – you want the guy who’s basically in rhythm,” Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy said of the run game on Thursday. “And that guy has a hot hand, let’s roll with him. But, regardless, those guys know their role. They’re all professional football players. When they step up to the plate, we expect them to perform at a high level, so their job is to go out there and perform and play, regardless of how many or how few reps that they’re getting. We’re expecting them to go out there and execute and give us the best opportunity to win.”

Quotable:
“I know where you’re going with that because returns, the return game is kind of not where we want it to be, but it’s getting better and better each week. If you really look at it and you see what’s preventing us from breaking out, I think soon we’re going to break one. I really do. And then confidence will build, and we’ll get better and better as we go. But we’re close and we do have a lot of new players. I’m not making any excuses. We’re behind where we need to be right now. I’m never going to be satisfied ever, but our return game, punt and kick return, need to be better. We’ll get there.” - Chiefs ST coordinator Dave Toub on kick, punt return blocking
“That you got to - sometimes when he’s out there you have to consider him a running back and sometimes when he’s out there you have to consider him a wide receiver because he’s both. I’ve never seen a guy break as many tackles as he does. But he’s unique. We haven’t faced anybody like this before. The challenges that they have when they put him in the backfield, when he’s not in the backfield, when they’re moving him and motioning him, they’re all a challenge for us. We’re working on it, and hopefully we can find a way to limit his explosive plays cause they’re really effective when he’s explosive.” - Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo on 49ers WR Deebo Samuel
Quick Hits:
From Week 6: Chris Jones got the microphone against the Buffalo Bills in Week 6. His mic’d up video went about exactly how you’d expect.
From the locker room: There seems to be quite a bit of excitement surrounding Willie Gay Jr.’s return to action. The third-year linebacker also shares quite a bit of excitement according to his running mate Nick Bolton.
From New Jersey: Jets WR Elijah Moore has requested a trade from New York after frustration over his role with the team. They don’t appear to be keen on granting his trade request. It’s certainly something to monitor, not just for the Chiefs, but for other competitors in the AFC conference.
