Net Value of all Draft Day Trades
The latest newsletter from KCSN Sports Data Scientist, Joseph Hefner.
The 2023 NFL draft has come and gone. The biggest event of the offseason. So much work goes into this event, from NFL teams and staff, to writers, reporters, NFL insiders, media companies, all researching, writing, and waiting for this past weekend to come.
Many of you know that a week before the draft, I built a trade calculator that allows you to input the picks received vs the picks given up, and it spits out an “excess value” number that shows you by how much you “won” or “lost” the trade. Those numbers are based on 6 different draft trade charts. Generally speaking, the team that trades up is going to “lose” the trade, because you have to pay a bit of a premium to trade up.
I calculated and posted every single trade of picks for picks that happened this past weekend. By my count, there were 41 total trades. 23 different teams traded up in the draft. 18 traded down. The Texans traded up 5 times, and the Raiders and Eagles both traded up four times. The Cardinals, Jaguars and the Rams all traded down four times. The Chargers and Dolphins didn’t trade at all.
