A tragic and scary moment occurred during “Monday Night Football” when Buffalo Bills S Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field after a routine tackle on Cincinnati Bengals WR Tee Higgins. Hamlin required CPR and was taken from Paycor Stadium to a local hospital via ambulance. The game was postponed and ultimately canceled for the evening. It was later revealed that Hamlin had suffered a cardiac arrest and was in critical condition. He remains hospitalized and in critical condition on Tuesday afternoon.
The NFL provided an update on their plans for the Bills-Bengals game and Week 18 Tuesday, explaining that the game would not be resumed this week as the focus remains on the health of Hamlin.
The NFL continues to be in regular contact with the medical team caring for Damar Hamlin, and also the Bills and Bengals organizations and the NFL Players Association.
After speaking with both teams and NFLPA leadership, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed the clubs today that the Bills-Bengals game will not be resumed this week.
The NFL has made no decision regarding the possible resumption of the game at a later date.
The league has not made any changes to the Week 18 regular season schedule.
We will continue to provide additional information as it becomes available.
Obviously, this game is important in terms of the AFC playoff race and seeding, but it is minor in comparison to Hamlin’s health and the trauma endured by players, coaches and staff members. The language “possible resumption” suggests that the Bills-Bengals game might not be resumed at all. In the case of the game being declared no contest, the Chiefs would stand to lock up the AFC’s No. 1 seed with a victory in Week 18.
For now, the Chiefs and the rest of the league will look to operate in Week 18 with as much normalcy as possible. There will be a heaviness across the league as they go through practice with continued prayers for Hamlin’s recovery.

Quotable:
“Yeah, he’s another weapon. I mean, obviously, you’ve all seen him when he gets the ball and he can make people miss and make stuff happen, but I don’t think people have really seen him run those deep routes yet. So, when you have another guy that can go deep and take the pressure off guys like Marquez (Valdes-Scantling) and Mecole (Hardman), when he gets back, and J-Wat (Justin Watson), Skyy (Moore), all those guys and have another guy, it helps you to be more diverse as an offense. They don’t know where it’s coming from.” - Patrick Mahomes on Kadarius Toney’s deep routes in Week 17
“Yeah, well he’s always had that. He’s so patient. I mentioned to our guys that he’s a quarterback – a legitimate quarterback in college – so he kind of knows how the game works as a whole, and he’s patient with that. So, I think that helps him in the run game knowing how gaps are set up, knowing how secondaries fill in for the run. And again, he just can catch the ball on top of all that. (He’s a) good runner (and a) good catcher.” - Andy Reid on Jerick McKinnon’s receiving touchdowns
