Nick Sirianni's history with Chiefs | KCSN Daily 2.1

Welcome back to the newest issue of KCSN Daily, where we deliver the best Kansas City Chiefs content to your inbox.
As much as the conversation will be about Andy Reid facing his former team in Super Bowl LVII, the same will be true of Philadelphia Eagles HC Nick Sirianni. From 2009 through 2012, Sirianni spent time with the Chiefs under Todd Haley. He filled titles such as offensive quality control coach, assistant QB coach, and WR coach during that time.
When Andy Reid was hired as head coach of the Chiefs in 2013, Sirianni was still under contract with Kansas City. Reid was the one who told him that he wouldn’t be retained as the team’s wide receiver coach.
“Yeah well when I came here, I was told (Eagles Head Coach) Nick Sirianni is a really special coach,” Reid said. “Really a good football coach. (Executive Vice President of Communications) Ted Crews was his biggest fan (then) and just said that this guy is really, really good. But, I had David (Culley). David was my assistant head coach and he had been with me for 14 years and so, he was coming with me. And I had to make that determination to keep Nick or not, and I knew being as good as he was and the reputation he had, I knew he was going to get something. And so, it’s worked out great for him.”
Sirianni would go on to join the San Diego Chargers’ staff from 2013-2017 before joining the Indianapolis Colts as offensive coordinator in 2018. From there, he’d make his case for a head-coaching opportunity in Philadelphia.
While some may try to spin it as Reid firing Sirianni, the truth is that the Eagles’ head coach has immense respect for Reid from the way he handled the situation.
“It was kind of more so just kind of receiving my fate there,” Sirianni said. “He had a guy. I really admired that he pulled me into the office and asked to meet with me and told me face-to-face that he had a guy, but had heard good things about me. And I appreciated that and his honesty, his ability to get to me as soon as he possibly could so I could move on and find another job. I didn’t get a chance to pick his brain at all, but I’ve got a ton of respect for Coach Reid and who he is as a person and who he is as a coach. His record speaks for itself, but you talk to everybody and they speak even higher of him as a person.”

Quotable:
“He’s a dog, man. You see every time he touches the ball, he’s electric with it. He definitely brings a lot of that – a lot of juice to the table, a lot of juice to the running back room and I’ve been saying that ever since he’s got here – since training camp that he was special, and he showed that this year. Me and him – I had a talk before we went out today and he showed why I believe he’s going to be one of the faces of the future when we talk about NFL running backs.” - Jerick McKinnon on Isiah Pacheco
“I remember talking to the guys about (PFHOF coach) Bill Walsh and when he had that group of rookies in the secondary, the (PFHOF DB) Ronnie Lott group and they were all rookies and they ended up going to the Super Bowl. It seems like a long time ago that I mentioned that to the guys and – to our coaches at least and I mean, here we sit. Obviously, there was a concern but there was an optimism there too that it can be done. Then the kids, just their work ethic, they showed us this at this in training camp, they showed it all the way through the season. If they got beat, they came back and fought back. You look at (Joshua) Williams, the PI’s that he had early (in the season) that put us in a bad position and all of a sudden he comes up with an interception in the (AFC) Championship Game with the deflection from (Bryan) Cook. I mean, it’s crazy how those things work but the kids stepped up, they didn’t lose their confidence and Dave’s done a great job with them. (It’s a) real tribute to them. I was optimistic but you don’t know how that journey’s going to go but here we sit, and they sure did a nice job.” - Andy Reid on Chiefs’ rookie defensive backs
