As mandatory minicamp began for the Chiefs on Tuesday, there was one notable absence. After missing all of the team’s voluntary workouts, Chris Jones remains away from the team during mandatory minicamp amidst a contract dispute.
Jones is in the final year of a four-year contract worth $80 million. After a career year (tied for fourth in the NFL in sacks last season with 15.5) and a Super Bowl-winning season, he’s due for a fresh payday. He also might take a small hit to his wallet for holding out.
All players who skip mandatory minicamp are subject to fines from their respective teams. This year the fine amounts are as follows:
Day 1: $16,459
Day 2: $32,920
Day 3: $49,374
Should Jones remain absent on the third day, the Chiefs can fine him nearly $99,000 in total. They don’t have to enforce this fine, but they’re within their rights to do so. In order to keep the peace ahead of a contract extension, the team might be wise to waive the fines.
Reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter indicate that the two sides have been talking shop and that the Chiefs expect to have a contract extension done this offseason. If you’ll recall, Jones signed his current deal back in July 2020 and the timing of a new deal could look similar. Schefter also suggested that getting a deal done with Jones could reignite the team’s interest in signing free agent WR DeAndre Hopkins.

Quotable:
“A couple other teams, really one other team, and another team was kind of on the waiver. But I was somewhere I wanted to be. I said that last year. Felt the same way this year. You know the whole free agency, trying to get things done, get on the same page is always a process, but fortunately, I was able to come back. This is where my heart is, and excited to be here again.” - Jerick McKinnon on his free agency
