Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes earned AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors for his three-touchdown performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was the only quarterback in the conference this week to throw three touchdown passes and he did it against what was the NFL’s No. 1 ranked scoring defense.
This marks the ninth time that Mahomes has earned AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors during his career, giving him the most weekly awards in franchise history. He tops Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Thomas, who had eight career awards. It took 10 seasons for Thomas to earn his awards, but Mahomes accomplished the feat in just over four seasons as the team’s starting quarterback.
Mahomes now has the fifth-most weekly awards among active NFL quarterbacks and he might not be done. Mahomes has never won more than two weekly awards in a single season, but it’s only Week 5. There is still plenty of time for him to set a personal best for weekly awards.
One On One:
Former Chiefs DT Mike DeVito is joined by former Chiefs OL Geoff Schwartz to talk about the Kansas City Chiefs offensive line, their recent performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and much more.
Week 5 injury updates:
The Chiefs didn’t suffer any significant injuries during the Week 4 win over the Buccaneers. Andy Reid said after the game that CB L’Jarius Sneed had an ankle injury and RG Trey Smith hurt his pec, but both players finished the game without incident. Kansas City didn’t hold a practice on Wednesday, so we don’t yet know what the injury report will bring.
We do know that Lucas Niang (knee) and Blake Bell (hip) are both eligible to return to practice this week. Bell was placed on injured reserve at the start of the season and Niang on the Reserve/PUP list. It’s unclear if either player will see their practice window opened this week. When the practice window is opened, the team will have a 21-day period where they must decide to activate the player to the 53-man roster or keep them on season-ending injured reserve.
As for the Raiders, it sounds like they held practice on Wednesday or at least a walk-through. According to The Athletic’s Tashan Reed, three key Raiders (WR Hunter Renfrow, TE Darren Waller and CB Rock Ya-Sin) all practiced but wore red non-contact jerseys. Renfrow had been out with a concussion and Ya-Sin a knee injury. Two other key players for Las Vegas, TE Foster Moreau and LB Denzel Perryman, were both absent from practice per Reed.
KCSN Update:
KCSN’s BJ Kissel sits down with RGR Football's Ryan Tracy to talk about how the Kansas City Chiefs have performed over the first quarter of the NFL season.
Quotable:
“That’s [Patrick Mahomes] man. It may be surprising to some, but it’s just one of those things that not necessarily we work on, but it’s scramble rules. It’s football man. Spacing – if a guy is out of space or out of his area where you feel like he should be then you get to the open spot.” - Clyde Edwards-Helaire on TD pass from Patrick Mahomes
“Yeah so, I think we need to keep growing there. I think the thing that makes me most excited is the influx of young guys that we’ve got and those guys having an opportunity to grow and get better. And so, you can see down – listen, if you guys keep working and do it day in and day out, you work then you have a chance to be something special. But if you’re – you have to stay in that frame of mind. If you start getting caught up in all the outside noise, then you’re going to plateau and you can’t do that. You can’t do that in this league or you get skunked. So, we just got to keep growing and (the) young guys (have to) keep getting better.” - Chiefs HC Andy Reid on the 2022 defense
Quick hits:
From the Rich Eisen Show: Fonzie likes him some Patrick Mahomes. Thanks to Rich Eisen, it appears Henry Winkler will get a chance to watch Mahomes play in Los Angeles this November.
From NFL Films: After the Week 4 win against the Buccaneers, Chiefs DT Chris Jones sought out Tom Brady for a quick chat. In the event this was the last time the two played against each other, Jones wanted to make sure that Brady knew how much fun he had playing against him over the years.
From New Heights: It’s Travis Kelce’s 33rd birthday and his brother Jason surprised him with a special guest on their podcast — none other than Ant-Man himself, Mr. Paul Rudd. Travis also gave his TE Mt. Rushmore in the episode.
