Every draft season we - as fans - start developing draft crushes. Players we want to see our favorite team draft above all else and we start getting attached to those players and their fit with our favorite team, the Kansas City Chiefs. A lot of times we lose sight of why we like them as it pertains to the fit with the team and trend more to just simply liking the player. That is absolutely normal but the focus does have to be shifted back to the team and the emphasis on that player’s fit with them.

Every year I like to do a little mental exercise that takes some common Chiefs’ Draft Crushes and boil them down to why people love their fit with the team. Removing the specifics of the player and focusing rather on why they would improve the team gives a blueprint of why it’s a popular pick. Then I like to look at other players later in the draft that could fill a similar type of role for the off chance that the Chiefs’ don’t or are unable to land the Draft Crush.

Approaching it from fulfilling the same role on the team allows us to not compare the two players directly but rather emphasize a specific “need’ we think exists. For this little exercise, let’s start at the top of the NFL Draft with three incredibly common Round 1 Chiefs’ Draft Picks and see if we can’t identify a discount version that could provide a similar role for the team.

Why Worthy: Simple, speed. Worthy ran the fastest forty yard dash time ever at the NFL Combine and the Chiefs are a team that loves speed at the position. It also helps that he is a very good route runner that possesses incredibly start-stop speed and the ability to run a rather full route tree. Sprinkle in some YAC ability and you have yourself a perfect Andy Reid WR who can take the top off from outside, the slot, or turn a short pass into a big play.
