The Chiefs' Ever-Evolving RPO Game
The Chiefs have been forced into altering their RPO game in 2021 and they've answered the call, and then some.
The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t play any football this past week but hopefully, the time off leads to the offense re-finding their mojo. The past month or two of offensive football for the Chiefs isn’t what fans had come to expect under Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes and hopefully the week off helps turn that around.
The Andy-creativity and Mahomes-magic has only been seen in spurts this season but there have been some flashes to believe that they can turn it around. The two-high coverage shell dilemma has taken front and center when focusing on the Chiefs offense and that has overshadowed some of the “newer” offensive concepts the Chiefs have put on the field this season.
One area that has received a large influx of new concepts in the Chiefs offensive playbook has been the read-pass-option game. This isn’t new for Andy Reid and the Chiefs, in fact, most seasons this is the case but it’s especially noticeable this season. Part of that has been the rest of the offense struggling but the other part is quite simply, the Chiefs are doing some really cool stuff with the RPO game.
