What You Need To Know From Day 7 of Chiefs Training Camp
Here's what you need to know from the Kansas City Chiefs second day of padded practice.
I took the day off from traveling up to St. Joseph to see the Kansas City Chiefs but that doesn’t mean I took the day off from paying attention to training camp.
Today marked the second day of padded practices for the Chiefs as their first preseason game is only 10 days away. With that, the team will be back in action tomorrow and Friday before taking Saturday off.
You can find me at training camp tomorrow and Friday if you plan on heading out. Make sure to follow me on Twitter @tuckerdfranklin for updates from St. Joe.
Here’s what you need to know from today’s practice.
Wide receiver Tyreek Hill did not practice today after leaving practice early yesterday with knee tendinitis. Head coach Andy Reid said yesterday they were taking it slow with Hill and were “pumping the breaks” on his time in practice.
In addition to Hill, cornerback Deandre Baker also did not participate and had no injury designation. Tackle Mike Remmers (back spasms) was also not practicing today.
Defensive end Alex Okafor left practice today with a hamstring issue and linebacker Willie Gay Jr. went into the concussion protocol.
In the good news department, cornerback Charvarius Ward (eye) and running back Darwin Thompson (COVID-19 protocol) were both back in action today.
Speaking to the media today was defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, defensive end Taco Charlton and tight end Travis Kelce.
Spagnuolo praised his guys a lot during his time with the media. Said he was really please with the development of Willie Gay and Nick Bolton. In regards to the defensive line, he said there will be multiple people — including Chris Jones, Tershawn Wharton and Mike Danna — who will play in multiple positions in the defensive front.
Lastly, he called the competition for cornerback in the air as there is still a lot of time left in camp for someone to separate themself from the pack.
Charlton spoke on the energy of the defense and said he believes the guys are hungry. He also said he returned to Kansas City for this season because he felt like he wanted to finish what he started with the team.
Finally, Kelce spoke highly of rookie Noah Gray during his time with the media. Kelce said, “He's gonna help us this year. I can't wait for the world to see what that guy can do.” He wrapped up with talk about his and Reid’s mustaches.
