The Kansas City Chiefs managed to bring some new additions to the team during the course of the last 24 hours.
Ahead of the 53-man roster cut deadline, Brett Veach made the rare in-division trade, acquiring former LSU DT Neil Farrell Jr. from the Las Vegas Raiders. It’s not something you see often, but it could turn out to be a big win for the player and both teams. Veach said they hope to have found the complete package in Farrell Jr.
“Well, we hope so many, that's all always the goal and the plan for any time you add someone to defensive line, they can be a complete player,” Veach said. “But right off the bat just a bigger body. I mean, that was one of the things that, you know, we put an emphasis on, I mean, he's 6-4 and change, and he's just a bigger, longer body.”
Veach said that Farrell was exactly the type of prototype that Steve Spagnuolo wanted calling him “a longer, run-playing defensive end.” He said that talks picked up late on Tuesday, but that the addition really fit several different needs for the team.
“So we're working hard, and your hopes are to get Chris (Jones) in here as soon as possible. And we continue to work through that. You know, there'll be an acclamation phase for him. Turk (Wharton), as I mentioned, as busted his tail to get back here. He's progressed, and it was great to see him come out of that last preseason game without any injuries. But, you know, those are still kind of things you're working through. And then you have a young guy and Keondre Colburn. That is got a chance to go out there and play and produce and some preseason games, but I mean the reality of it is these rookies have played like a game. So just wanted to get some depth from an injury standpoint, from a depth standpoint. And also again, I think we just from a you know, body type we're trying to get a little bit bigger too. So I think it kind of fit a bunch of needs for us. And you know, that's why when we had the opportunity we we just ran with it yesterday.”

On Darius Rush (and more Neil Farrell Jr.)
The Chiefs also submitted a successful waiver claim for CB Darius Rush, a fifth-round draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts this past year. Veach emphasized that he had all of the traits the team was looking for in that position.
“We were looking for an athletic corner that you know, has size, length and speed,” Veach said. “And so just in the last, you know, two days here, we're able to, to get two of those guys, you know, a longer DT and an athletic corner that fits the measurables we're looking for and throwing like both those players come out and had, you know, the tape was, it just seemed like you watched it yesterday on Rush. And then the DT I mean, just came out last year and was a fourth-round pick last year. So again, two young guys will get to add to our roster along with the draft picks. I think all of them, you know, earned their way on the roster this year. As well as one undrafted free agent.”
Anytime you can get an athletic cornerback on his rookie contract, that’s a swing that you’re going to want to take.
