Stats to know ahead of Super Bowl LVII:
Series history: This will be just the 10th meeting between the Chiefs and Eagles since 1972. The Chiefs currently lead the all-time series over Philadelphia 5-4, with Kansas City winning each of the last three games. Ironically, three of the losses for the Chiefs came at the hands of Andy Reid when he was head coach in Philadelphia (2001, 2005 and 2009).
Something’s got to give: For the superstitious types, you may have heard about some things ahead of Super Bowl LVII. First, the Eagles are the designated home team this year. According to NFL Network’s James Palmer, the designated home team is just 23-33 in Super Bowls, including losses in 12 of the last 16 games. The Bengals were the designated home team in Super Bowl LVI. On the other hand, Patrick Mahomes has the MVP curse to contend with. The last nine league MVPs to play in the Super Bowl the same year they won MVP have lost the big game.
Evenly matched: The Chiefs and Eagles finished the 2022 NFL season and postseason leading up to Super Bowl LVII with some shocking similarities. They both finished with a 16-3 overall record. They both scored the exact same number of points with 546 on the season. The running game for each team finished with exactly 4.6 yards per carry. Both teams also have the same number of takeaways this postseason with four.
Slot machine: The Eagles’ defense is pretty airtight, save for one glaring weakness. Per Chiefs Wire contributor Wesley Roesch, Philly allowed an average of 100.2 yards per game to players in the slot in 2022 (incl. playoffs). That could be an area that Andy Reid could seek to exploit with matchups like Travis Kelce, Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore.
KCSN Update:
KCSN’s BJ Kissel sits down with Pro Football Focus' Trevor Sikkema to get his three key matchups in the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl LVII
Quotable:
Jason (Kelce) convinced me that (Travis Kelce) was gonna be OK, and if he wasn't, he was gonna beat him up. I knew Trav from when he played against Temple. Both of my sons were at Temple. So I had a chance to see him play in college and meet him and all of that stuff. - Andy Reid on drafting Travis Kelce after drafting Jason Kelce with the Eagles
It sounds fun. On paper, it’s exactly what we want to face. As a defensive line, we welcome that challenge because we pride ourselves on being the best team on the field every Sunday. So, you want to set that tone in the trenches and it’s the opportunity to prove it against one of the best offensive lines like you guys were saying.” - Carlos Dunlap on facing off against the Eagles O-Line
